How the face shape detector works

The detector runs Google’s MediaPipe face model directly in your browser. It places 478 measurement points on your photo, then computes the proportions that hairdressers actually use: length-to-width ratio, jaw width against cheekbone width, forehead width, and how pointed or flat your chin is. Those measurements are compared against the classic seven face shapes, and you get the closest match with a similarity score — not a guess from eyeballing a mirror.

What the match percentage means

The percentage is a similarity score: how closely your measured proportions sit to the textbook definition of that shape. Most real faces are blends, so an 85–95% match is normal and a 100% is rare. When two shapes are genuinely close, we say so and show both instead of pretending to a precision the geometry doesn’t support.

Why face shape matters for your haircut

Almost every "what haircut should I get" rule starts from face shape: round faces gain from height and length, square jaws soften with layers, heart shapes balance with weight near the chin, long faces shorten with a fringe. Knowing your shape turns a wall of hairstyle photos into a shortlist. And because this tool is built into Stylery, you can take any recommended cut and preview it on your own photo in the Studio — not on a model.

Your photo stays on your device

This analysis is fully client-side: the model downloads into your browser and your selfie is never uploaded to any server. Close the tab and nothing remains. That’s the same privacy stance as the rest of Stylery — originals are never kept.

Questions, answered

Is the face shape detector really free?

Yes — no account, no watermark, no trial. The analysis runs in your browser, so it costs us almost nothing to offer. We make money when you later choose to preview looks on your own photo in the Studio.

Does my photo get uploaded?

No. The face model runs inside your browser via WebAssembly. Your photo never leaves your device, and nothing is stored anywhere.

What are the seven face shapes?

Oval, round, square, heart, oblong, diamond and triangle (pear). They describe the relationship between your face length, cheekbone width, jaw width, forehead width and chin shape.

What photo works best?

A front-facing photo in decent light, with hair pulled back off your face and no heavy tilt. Glasses are usually fine; group photos and strong side angles are not.

How accurate is it?

The landmark model is Google’s production-grade face mesh, and the classification follows the same proportion rules stylists use. Faces are blends though — if you sit between two shapes, we show both rather than force a single answer.
